Introduction to the OLE at JALT 2012 Compendium

On this compendium

OLE, the Other Languages Educators Special Interest Group in JALT, the Japanese Association for Language Teaching, may arguably claim to be the biggest organization and have the most presentations of any Japanese institution concerned with the instruction of multiple foreign languages. This volume offers all freely visible material that was presented in the OLE presentations at JALT 2012 on Oct. 13 and 14 at ACT City in Hamamatsu. With its sheer amount and span of areas, approaches, languages and research topics covered at least in part, this is a small “compendium” of presentations in cross-linguistic learning and teaching contexts in Japan.

The role of OLE in JALT

OLE is not meant to interfere with individual language teaching organizations. They are vital to demonstrate that each foreign language other than English is strong enough on its own in Japan. OLE is meant to give these organizations additional clout as a second force in the large overarching language teacher association that is JALT with its over 2000 members. JALT and OLE are very well on their way to become one, if not the first, address to contact if multiple foreign languages are concerned.

OLE at JALT 2012

This year’s JALT 2012 conference was another successful event for OLE. Despite two no-shows of international individual presentations, there were 27 presentations by 24 presenters in 7 workshops and one individual presentation. Besides the annual French Forum and German and Spanish workshops and the Multilingualism Forum as well as the Embassy Forum: Foreign Language Teaching in the 21st century, this year saw the first Chinese workshop at JALT. Prof. Mizuguchi (of the Japan Forum) explained us the Chinese part of the Meyasu curriculum for high schools. Four more presentations helped us get an even deeper impression of the efforts made in teaching and learning Chinese in Japan. It is hoped that we will see and hear more of this language and that it will be even more widely represented in JALT in coming years.

On issuing this compendium

This introduction can give only a brief overview of the events related to OLE at JALT 2012 all of whom are represented, in one way or other, in the following pages.

At the conference itself, we have been gathering the presenters’ papers, presentations and materials and this is the third year the presentation materials are made public in this form. Materials appear as they were made available by the presenters.

This compendium contains most materials from almost all contributions. The wide variety of presentations make a difference in various areas of other foreign language teaching such as languages, methods and results of both research and teaching.

Events and numbers from OLE at JALT 2012

This year saw a slight increase in presentations and events.

All in all we had 27 presentations by 24 presenters in 8 events:

- 3 presentations in the Multilingualism forum by Profs. Hoshino, Maybin and Reinelt.

- 3 presentations by Profs. Lauffenburger,  Adamek, and Fortin in Le Forum de Francais.

- 4 presentations in the Spanish workshop by Profs. Letelier, Silva, Astigueta, and  Fernandez.

- 6 presentations in the OLE SIG forum by Profs. Krause-Ono (2), Voegel, Hunke , Kasjan, and Reinelt.

- 5 presentations in the German workshop by Profs. Meyer, Höhn, Christ-Kagoshima, Harting, and Reinelt.

- 5 presentations in the Chinese Workshop by Profs. Mizuguchi, Chen, Yeh, Lee and Reinelt.

- 1 presentation in the Embassy Panel: FL Teaching in the 21st century: Rudolf Reinelt for the DAAD, the German Academic Exchange Service.

- There was also one independent presentation by Prof. Vannieuwenhuyse.

Still available materials

This year we also had a huge number of up-to-date materials, some of which are still available from the coordinator at reinelt.rudolf.my@ehime-u.ac.jp for free.

Elections

OLE also held elections at its Annual General Meeting. All officers had to step down due to re-election restrictions. In the ensuing election, each of the former officers was proposed as a new candidate and then elected

On using this compendium

All readers are asked to spread information on this compendium as widely as possible to their colleagues, friends, teachers and learners, etc. The materials can be used as is in class and for research. For all other purposes, please contact the authors for permission personally or via this coordinator at reinelt.rudolf.my@ehime-u.ac.jp.

Gratitude

As everything appears online, we gratefully acknowledge the support of the Education and Student Support Center’s General Education Department at Ehime University for OLE at JALT.

It is hoped that this compendium is another helpful service to everyone in OLE and beyond by helping updating all other languages teachers and researchers, as well as getting ideas for the future.

Your OLE SIG coordinator,

Rudolf Reinelt, Ehime University
